Australian goal shooter widely regarded as the finest of the 1990s, who captained Australia to the sport's first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in 1998.
Vicki Wilson was born on 11 February 1965 in Brisbane, Queensland. Originally a defender, she switched to goal shooter as a teenager and never looked back, making her Australian debut in 1985 after being identified by the Australian Institute of Sport. Over a 15-year international career, Wilson competed in four World Championships — a record for any Australian player — winning three titles (1991, 1995 and 1999) and captaining the side to gold in her final match in 1999, a one-point victory. In 1998 she captained Australia to the sport's first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal at Kuala Lumpur, defeating New Zealand 42–39. At the time of her retirement she was regarded as the finest goal shooter in the world, renowned for a shooting routine of 200 practice shots a day, six days a week. Domestically, Wilson represented Queensland for over a decade, becoming the first player to reach 150 caps for the state, before becoming the inaugural captain of the Queensland Firebirds when the Commonwealth Bank Trophy launched in 1997, a role she held until retiring in 1999. She was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 1992, inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Australian Netball Hall of Fame in 2008. She went on to coach the Firebirds (2006–2009) and later the New Zealand Silver Ferns and Fiji national team.
