Australian goal defence and former national captain who ended Australia's 12-year Commonwealth Games gold drought in 2014 and won the World Cup as captain in 2015.
Laura Geitz was born on 4 November 1987 in Allora, a small town in Queensland's Darling Downs region. Bullied for her height as a child, she was encouraged by her father to "stand tall" — advice that came to define both her playing style and leadership. She made her domestic debut with the Queensland Firebirds in 2008 and her Australian Diamonds debut the same year. Geitz took over the Firebirds captaincy in 2011 following an injury to her predecessor, leading the club to an undefeated premiership-winning season. She was named national captain in 2013, and the following year led Australia to Commonwealth Games gold in Glasgow, ending a 12-year gold medal drought at the event. In 2015, playing in front of a home crowd, she captained the Diamonds to World Cup gold in Sydney, having also been part of Australia's victorious 2011 World Cup squad. Geitz's career was marked by resilience: her father was killed in a farm accident in 2013, a tragedy that nearly ended her career before she returned with renewed determination. She took a break from the sport for the birth of her first child in 2017 before returning for a final Commonwealth Games campaign in 2018, where Australia won silver. She retired from international netball in 2018 with 71 Test caps, and from the Queensland Firebirds later that year after 169 domestic games and three premierships (2011, 2015, 2016). She was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2025, and a bronze statue of her stands at Brisbane's Nissan Arena.
