Australian defender of Tongan descent who won two World Cup titles with the Diamonds before coming out of retirement a decade later to represent Tonga at their first-ever World Cup.

Mo'onia Frances Gerrard was born on 15 November 1980 in Bathurst, Australia, of Tongan descent, and began playing netball as a child at her mother's Dee Why Beach Netball Club. She made her elite domestic debut with the Sydney Sandpipers in 1999, before a string of serious injuries, including a knee reconstruction, cost her the entire 2005 season and selection for the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Gerrard fought back into the Australian Diamonds in 2006 and went on to win 68 Test caps, playing a key defensive role in Australia's World Cup-winning campaigns in 2007 and 2011, and winning Commonwealth Games silver in 2010, the year she was named Australian International Player of the Year. She won the inaugural Liz Ellis Diamond in 2008, Australian netball's most prestigious individual honour, and led the Adelaide Thunderbirds to the 2010 ANZ Championship title before finishing her domestic career at the NSW Swifts, whom she captained. After retiring and being honoured with an OAM in 2016 for services to netball and the community, Gerrard made an extraordinary return in 2023, aged 42, to represent Tonga at their first-ever appearance at the Netball World Cup in Cape Town — 16 years after her last international match for Australia. She has since founded the Mo'onia Gerrard Cup, an interstate competition supporting Pacific netball pathways, and served on the Netball Australia board as Athlete Director.
