The greatest tight end of his era and the only man to win a Super Bowl as both a player and a head coach — Mike Ditka's impact on the NFL spans five decades.
Mike Ditka was the first tight end inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame — revolutionising the position from a blocking role to a receiving weapon. He won the NFL Championship in 1963 with the Bears and Super Bowl VI with Dallas as a player, then won Super Bowl XX as head coach of the 1985 Chicago Bears — one of the greatest teams ever assembled. He is the only person to win a Super Bowl as a player and coach with the same franchise.
The 1985 Chicago Bears team he coached had a defence so dominant that it shut out three opponents in the playoffs — the only team ever to achieve that feat.
