Australian goal keeper and former national captain who led the Diamonds to the 2007 World Championship title and captained the Sydney Swifts to four domestic premierships.
Elizabeth Margaret Ellis was born on 17 January 1973 in Windsor, New South Wales. After earning a netball scholarship to the Australian Institute of Sport, she made her Australian debut in July 1993 against Wales and went on to become one of the most decorated defenders in the sport's history. Ellis played her entire 15-season domestic career for the Sydney Swifts, captaining the club from 2000 and leading them to four national premierships (2001, 2004, 2006 and 2007), including an undefeated 2006 season. She holds the record for the most games played in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy era with 173 matches. Internationally, she was part of Australian teams that won three World Championship gold medals (1995, 1999 and 2007) and two Commonwealth Games golds (1998 and 2002), and was named the Australian team's Most Valuable Player on four occasions (1996, 1998, 2002 and 2006). Named national captain in 2004, Ellis suffered a career-threatening knee reconstruction in 2005 but fought back to help Australia win the 2007 World Championship in her final tournament, a fairytale ending to a 15-year international career. She retired in 2007 as Australia's most-capped netball international and became one of the sport's leading broadcasters, later serving as Chair of Netball Australia from 2024. She was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2018 and elevated to Legend status in the NSW Hall of Champions in 2025.
