Wales's most-capped netballer, who captained the Welsh Feathers for over a decade across four Commonwealth Games and two World Cups.
Suzy Drane was born in St Asaph, Wales, and began playing for Chester Netball Club at age 11 before representing Cheshire at underage levels. She made her senior debut for Wales in 2005 aged 18, against Jamaica, going on to become the country's most capped netball international. Drane first captained Wales in 2010 and went on to lead or co-lead the side at the 2011 and 2015 World Netball Championships and at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games, having also represented Wales at the 2006 Commonwealth Games before taking on the captaincy. Wales has never won a medal at a World Cup or Commonwealth Games, but Drane's leadership was central to the country's competitiveness on the international stage across nearly two decades. Domestically, Drane was a founding member of Celtic Dragons when the club joined the Netball Superleague in 2005, playing for the Dragons for 14 seasons and captaining them to a runners-up finish in the 2013 Grand Final. She reached her 100th cap in 2019 and retired from international netball in October 2022 after helping Wales qualify for the 2023 World Cup, finishing with 125 caps. She was inducted into the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame in 2023, only the third netballer to receive the honour, and has worked as a senior lecturer in sport development at Cardiff Metropolitan University since 2018.
