Point Guard

American basketball point guard known for his explosive athleticism, three-time NBA All-Star, and Co-Rookie of the Year winner with dynamic scoring ability.

Stephen D'Shawn Francis was born in Silver Spring, Maryland in 1977. He attended the University of Maryland after a difficult upbringing and became a projected lottery pick. Vancouver Grizzlies selected him second overall in the 1999 NBA Draft but Francis refused to report, forcing a trade to Houston. He co-won the Rookie of the Year award with Elton Brand in 2000. His nine-season career produced 18.0 points, 6.0 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game — a rebounds total remarkable for a 6ft 3in point guard. He was selected to three All-Star games. He was named to the All-NBA Second Team in 2003. His athleticism — particularly his leaping ability for his position — produced highlights that made him among the most entertaining players of his era. His combination of scoring, rebounding and playmaking from the point guard position made him genuinely unusual and valuable. A knee condition progressively worsened from 2004 onwards, limiting his effectiveness and ending his career earlier than his talent warranted. He was named one of the top 10 Houston Rockets players in franchise history despite his relatively brief tenure.
