Stephon Xavier Marbury was born in Coney Island, Brooklyn in 1977, one of the most celebrated basketball recruiting stories in New York City history. Milwaukee Bucks selected him fourth overall in the 1996 NBA Draft. His 13-season NBA career produced 19.3 points and 7.6 assists per game and two All-Star appearances. He was considered one of the top two or three point guards in the league during his peak seasons at New Jersey and Phoenix, where he averaged 20 and 22 points with 8 assists. His career was disrupted by his contentious time at the New York Knicks — a difficult relationship with management, coaches and the media that limited his effectiveness. After his NBA career ended, he signed with the Beijing Ducks of the Chinese Basketball Association and became one of the most beloved sports figures in China — fans named a statue after him and he was awarded Beijing citizenship in 2014. He won three CBA championships in China. He launched his own affordable basketball shoe line — the Starbury — selling shoes for less than $15 to make them accessible to young people who could not afford premium brands. He was inducted into the Chinese Basketball Association Hall of Fame.
