Senegalese footballer who won the Champions League and Premier League with Liverpool, leading Senegal to their first Africa Cup of Nations title in 2022.
Sadio Mane was born in Bambali, a remote village in southern Senegal in 1992, the son of an imam. He moved to Dakar before Metz signed him, then Red Bull Salzburg in 2012 and Southampton for £11.8 million in 2014. Jurgen Klopp brought him to Liverpool for £34 million in 2016 and his six seasons at Anfield produced 120 goals in 269 appearances, the Premier League title (2020), Champions League (2019), FA Cup and League Cup (2022). He and Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino formed the most dynamic attacking trio in Liverpool's Premier League history. He was named African Player of the Year in 2019 and 2022. He led Senegal to his first Africa Cup of Nations title in 2022, scoring the deciding penalty in the final. Bayern Munich paid £35 million in 2022 before he moved to Al-Nassr. Beyond football, he donated millions to build a hospital, school and community centre in Bambali — acts of generosity that made him a revered figure across Africa. His pace, directness and work rate made him one of the Premier League's most effective and complete attackers.
