American heavyweight boxer who retired as the only undefeated heavyweight champion in boxing history with a perfect 49-0 professional record.

Rocco Francis Marchegiano — Rocky Marciano — was born in Brockton, Massachusetts in 1923 and retired in 1956 as the only heavyweight champion in history with a perfect professional record — 49 wins, 43 by knockout (88% KO rate) and 0 losses or draws. His career spanned 1947 to 1955. He won the world heavyweight title by stopping Joe Louis — the iconic champion — in 1951, and claimed the undisputed heavyweight championship by stopping Jersey Joe Walcott in 13 rounds in September 1952, coming from behind after being knocked down. He defended the title 6 times. His power was exceptional — described by trainer Charley Goldman as the hardest puncher pound-for-pound in heavyweight history — and his conditioning was legendary, often training in spartan conditions with minimal equipment. He was not tall for a heavyweight at 5ft 10in and his reach was short, but his relentless forward pressure, granite chin and punching power overcame every opponent. He retired voluntarily in 1956 at 31, citing a desire to spend time with his family. He was Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year in 1952 and 1954. He died in a plane crash in August 1969, aged 45, one day before his 46th birthday.
