Nevin Galmarini

Swiss snowboarder who turned Olympic silver into gold, winning the parallel giant slalom title at Pyeongchang 2018 four years after finishing runner-up at Sochi.

Nevin Galmarini was born on 4 December 1986 in St. Gallen, Switzerland, and grew up between Herisau and the Lower Engadine village of Ardez, where he attended a sports-focused school alongside his brother. He won the Swiss national parallel giant slalom championship in 2009 and made his Olympic debut at the 2010 Vancouver Games. Galmarini's international breakthrough came at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, where he won silver in the parallel giant slalom. Four years later at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, at age 31 - one of the oldest competitors in the field - he produced a flawless run in every heat, qualifying fastest for the final before holding off South Korea's Lee Sang-ho, the home favorite, by 0.43 seconds to win gold. The victory made Switzerland the most successful nation in Olympic parallel giant slalom history, having now won three of the five Olympic titles contested in the event since its introduction in 2002. Galmarini went on to compete at a fourth Olympics at Beijing 2022 before retiring from competition. He has since transitioned into coaching and organizing snowboard carving camps in Switzerland, sharing his approach to mental preparation and technical mastery with the next generation of riders, while also working in banking and as a Swiss television commentator on winter sports.
