Michela Moioli was born on 17 July 1995 in Alzano Lombardo, Italy, and joined the Italian snowboard cross team as a teenager after catching the attention of national coaches. At the 2014 Sochi Olympics, aged just 18, she was the youngest competitor in the snowboard cross final, but a heavy crash tore the cruciate ligament in her knee, ending her season and threatening her career before it had truly begun. Moioli spent a year in rehabilitation before returning to full fitness. At the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, four years after her devastating injury, she won the large final of the women's snowboard cross to become the first Italian ever to win an Olympic gold medal in the sport, one of three Italian golds at those Games alongside alpine skier Sofia Goggia and speed skater Arianna Fontana. Her comeback story was later profiled in the Olympic Channel documentary series 'Against All Odds.' Moioli served as Italy's flagbearer at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, but her title defense ended with a fall in the small final that also injured her face, chin, and ankle; she still won silver in the mixed team event, Italy's first-ever Olympic medal in that format. After further injuries slowed her in 2023, she returned to winning form and completed her collection in 2025 by finally claiming World Championship gold in Engadin, Switzerland - the only major title that had eluded her.
