Martin Raymond Keown was born in Oxford on 24 July 1966. He came through Arsenal's academy before spells at Brighton, Aston Villa and Everton. He returned to Arsenal in 1993 and became one of the most important defenders in the club's history, making 449 appearances. His aggressive man-marking, aerial prowess and unrelenting competitive spirit complemented Adams, Bould and Dixon perfectly. He won three Premier League titles (1998, 2002, 2004), three FA Cups and was a member of the 'Invincibles' team that went the entire 2003-04 season unbeaten. He earned 43 England caps and featured at Euro 92 and the 2002 World Cup. After leaving Arsenal in 2004, he had brief spells at Leicester and Reading before becoming a respected pundit.
