Alan Shearer was born in Gosforth, Newcastle in 1970 and made his First Division debut for Southampton at 17, scoring a hat-trick. He moved to Blackburn Rovers in 1992 for £3.6 million and his 34 goals drove them to the 1994–95 Premier League title. Newcastle paid a then world-record £15 million in 1996 to bring him home, where he stayed for the remaining decade of his career. His 260 Premier League goals remain the all-time record. Across all competitions he scored 379 goals in 734 appearances — including 11 hat-tricks. He earned 63 England caps and scored 30 international goals, including five at Euro 96 where he was the tournament's top scorer. His top speed was 29.8 km/h and he covered 10.4 km per game — industrious work for a striker of his physical type. He was a two-footed centre-forward, exceptional in the air, and scored at a rate of one goal every 1.9 appearances at Blackburn. His Southampton career: 23 goals in 158 apps. Blackburn: 112 goals in 138 apps. Newcastle: 206 goals in 405 apps. Despite never winning a major trophy at Newcastle, his loyalty to the club is among the most celebrated in British football history. He was PFA Players' Player of the Year in 1995.
