The most beloved one-club man in modern football — Borussia Dortmund's captain through two decades.
Marco Reus was born in Dortmund, Germany in 1989. He developed at Mönchengladbach before Borussia Dortmund paid £11 million to bring the local boy home in 2012. His twelve Dortmund seasons produced 248 goals — the club's all-time record — and a legendary status in German football. He was named German Footballer of the Year three times. His career was devastatingly interrupted by injuries at the worst possible moments — he tore ankle ligaments the day before the 2014 World Cup squad announcement, missing the tournament in which Germany won the championship. He remained at Dortmund through difficult periods when the club was far from Champions League competition — his loyalty becoming the defining personal characteristic of his career. He scored in the 2024 Champions League Final at Wembley as Dortmund led Real Madrid at half-time before losing 2-0. He left Dortmund on a free transfer in 2024 after 12 years. He is Dortmund's greatest ever player and the most admired one-club loyalty story in German football.
