Lou Brock was born in El Dorado, Arkansas in 1939. St. Louis Cardinals acquired him from the Chicago Cubs in 1964 in what became one of the most celebrated trades in baseball history — he immediately helped St. Louis win the World Series. His 19-season career produced 3,023 hits, 938 stolen bases (the all-time record when he retired in 1979) and two World Series championships (1964, 1967). He was a six-time All-Star. He stole 118 bases in 1974 — a single-season record at the time. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985 on his first ballot. He remained one of the most respected figures in Cardinals franchise history and a prominent ambassador for the game after retirement.
