Brazilian footballer regarded as one of the greatest strikers of the 1990s, World Cup winner in 1994 and prolific goalscorer for club and country
José Roberto Gama de Oliveira, known as Bebeto, was born in Vitória, Brazil on 16 February 1964. He came through Flamengo and became one of Brazil's greatest strikers of the 1980s and 1990s. His partnership with Romário for Brazil is regarded as the greatest striking duo in World Cup history — together they scored seven goals as Brazil won the 1994 World Cup in the USA. Bebeto's "cradle" celebration — rocking an imaginary baby after the birth of his son Matheus — became the most iconic celebration in World Cup history, instantly copied by players around the world. He played most of his club career in Spain at Deportivo de La Coruña and Sevilla, winning two Copa del Rey titles. He earned 75 international caps and scored 39 goals for Brazil. His close control, movement and finishing ability made him the perfect foil for the more powerful Romário.
