Israel Adesanya was born in Lagos, Nigeria on 22 July 1989, raised in New Zealand. A former kickboxing champion, Adesanya brought striking artistry to the UFC's middleweight division. He held the UFC middleweight title from 2019 to 2022 (first reign) and again from 2022. His wins over Robert Whittaker (twice), Paulo Costa, Marvin Vettori and Anderson Silva defined his era. His reign was briefly interrupted by a KO loss to Alex Pereira in November 2022 — a rivalry rooted in their kickboxing past. He recaptured the title by KOing Pereira in April 2023, before losing again to Sean Strickland via split decision in September 2023. Known as 'The Last Stylebender'.
