French centre-back who became one of Europe's most promising defenders, starring for RB Leipzig before joining Liverpool where he won multiple trophies.
Ibrahima Konaté was born in Paris, France in 1999. RB Leipzig developed him from Sochaux before Liverpool paid £36 million in 2021. His three Liverpool seasons have produced the FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League Final appearance and Premier League title. His combination of size — 6ft 4in — with pace and composure makes him an ideal modern centre-back. He performs best in knockout football — his performances in Champions League knockout rounds have been consistently exceptional. He represented France 18 times. His partnership with Virgil van Dijk when both are fit has been described as the most complete central defensive pairing in Liverpool's history since Sami Hyypiä and Stéphane Henchoz. He missed significant time in his second Liverpool season through injury but returned for the title-winning campaign in 2024. He is considered one of Liverpool's most important long-term defensive assets.
