Gordon Greenidge

Dominant Barbadian opening batsman and architect of many West Indian victories, whose powerful hooking, driving and extraordinary partnerships with Desmond Haynes defined an era.

Born in Bridgetown, Barbados, on May 1, 1951, Cuthbert Gordon Greenidge emerged from humble beginnings to become one of cricket's most feared opening batsmen. He developed his aggressive batting style on the hard wickets of Barbados, where he learned to play shots all around the wicket with particular strength through the off-side. His early cricket was played for Barbados in regional competitions before catching the attention of West Indies selectors. Greenidge made his Test debut against India in 1974 and quickly established himself as a cornerstone of the dominant West Indies batting order. His partnership with fellow Barbadian Desmond Haynes became legendary, with the pair forming one of cricket's most successful opening combinations throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. Greenidge's batting was characterized by his ability to accelerate scoring when circumstances demanded, making him particularly valuable in limited-overs cricket where his strike rate often exceeded that of his contemporaries. The right-hander's finest hour came at Lord's in 1984 against England, when he scored 226 despite batting with a runner due to injury. This innings, which guided the West Indies to an unlikely victory after following on, is widely regarded as one of Test cricket's greatest individual performances. Throughout his career, Greenidge scored over 7,500 runs in Test cricket at an average exceeding 44, including 19 centuries. He was equally effective in one-day internationals, helping the West Indies win the 1975 and 1979 World Cups. Greenidge's legacy extends beyond his statistical achievements. His fearless approach to fast bowling and ability to dominate attacks during the West Indies' golden era helped establish the template for modern aggressive opening batting. After retiring from international cricket in 1991, he remained involved in the game as a coach and selector, contributing to cricket development in the Caribbean and beyond.
