Born in Bridgetown, Barbados, on July 28, 1936, Garfield St Aubrun Sobers emerged from humble beginnings to become cricket's most complete player. The son of a merchant seaman who died when Sobers was young, he learned the game on the beaches and streets of Barbados before making his first-class debut for the island at age 16 in 1953. His exceptional natural ability across all facets of the game quickly became apparent, leading to his West Indies Test debut against England in 1954 at just 17 years old. Sobers' international career spanned two decades, during which he established himself as the finest all-rounder in cricket history. His left-handed batting combined classical technique with explosive power, while his bowling repertoire was uniquely versatile—he could deliver left-arm orthodox spin, chinaman and googly variations, medium-pace swing, and even genuine fast bowling depending on conditions. As a fielder, particularly in the slips, he was regarded as one of the safest hands in the game. He captained the West Indies from 1965 to 1972, leading the team through a transitional period that laid foundations for their later dominance. His defining achievements include a Test batting average of 57.78 from 93 matches, along with 235 wickets at 34.03. In 1958, at age 21, he scored 365 not out against Pakistan, setting a Test record that stood for 36 years. A decade later, playing for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan, he became the first player to hit six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket, a feat that captured global attention and exemplified his fearless approach. Sobers transformed perceptions of what an all-rounder could achieve, setting standards that remain unmatched.
