Freddy Eusebio Rincón Valencia was born in Buenaventura, Colombia on 14 August 1966. A dynamic, powerful box-to-box midfielder, Rincón was one of the most important players of Colombia's golden generation. He began at Deportivo Cali before moving to Europe, playing for Napoli, Real Madrid, Corinthians and Palmeiras during a distinguished career. He is perhaps best remembered for his last-minute equaliser against Germany at the 1990 World Cup — a crucial goal that sent Colombia through to the Round of 16. He also scored a memorable long-range goal against Germany in a 1994 World Cup friendly. He won the Copa América with Colombia in 2001. He earned 84 caps and scored 17 goals. Rincón tragically died on 13 April 2022, aged 55, from injuries sustained in a road accident in Cali.
