His 13 seasons at Stamford Bridge produced 211 goals in 648 appearances — a record for a midfielder in Premier League history. Under José Mourinho he was named FWA Footballer of the Year in 2005 and was runner-up for the Ballon d'Or in the same year. He won the Premier League twice (2005, 2006), the Champions League (2012), the FA Cup four times and the League Cup twice with Chelsea. His goal in the 2012 Champions League final against Bayern Munich helped secure the title on penalties. He scored 177 Premier League goals from midfield — a figure bettered only by Wayne Rooney and Andrew Cole among outfield players. He earned 106 England caps, scoring 29 goals — then a record for a midfielder. Brief spells at Manchester City and New York City FC followed before he returned to Chelsea as player then manager (2019–21). His combination of goalscoring from deep positions, stamina and technical quality made him one of the Premier League's defining players. He later managed Everton and returned to Chelsea as caretaker in 2023.
