Colin Lloyd

English darts player nicknamed 'Jaws' who was world number one from 2005 to 2007 and won both the World Grand Prix and World Matchplay.

Born in Colchester, Essex, on 7 August 1973, Colin Lloyd began playing darts as a schoolboy, representing Essex in youth leagues at 13, and worked as a builder before turning to darts full time. He made his televised debut at the 1999 World Matchplay, reaching the quarter-finals in his first appearance. Lloyd's career peaked in the mid-2000s. He won his first major title at the 2004 World Grand Prix, beating Alan Warriner-Little in the final, and followed it up in 2005 by winning the World Matchplay, defeating Canada's John Part with a spectacular 170 checkout in a final remembered for commentator Sid Waddell's line, 'Alrighty, Lloydy my son, you have done it.' Those results carried him to the world number one ranking, which he held from April 2005 to January 2007. A consistently high-volume scorer known for his aggressive throwing style, Lloyd also reached the semi-finals of the 2002 World Championship and won ten Players Championship titles over his career. Although he never claimed the World Championship itself, his two major titles and world number one ranking place him among the sport's elite performers of the 2000s. Lloyd's form declined after losing his world number one status in 2007, and he retired from the professional tour in 2018. He is remembered as one of only a small number of players to have won the World Matchplay, and for his distinctive 'Jaws' nickname, inspired by his teeth and his walk-on entrance.
