Australian shooter who captained her country for six years in the 1980s and became the first netballer ever elevated to Legend status in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

Anne Sargeant was born on 28 December 1957 and began playing netball at seven with the Forest Club in New South Wales. She represented Australia for 11 years from 1978 to 1988, playing 52 Tests and captaining the national team for the last six years of her career, part of Australia's shared 1979 World Championship title alongside New Zealand and Trinidad and Tobago, and outright gold in 1983. Sargeant led Australia to an undefeated tour of Wales in 1985, during which she posted a career-best three consecutive Tests shooting 100% accuracy, and captained the side to a shared second-place finish with Trinidad and Tobago at the 1987 World Championships in Glasgow. Her 40 Tests as captain remain the third-most in Australian netball history behind Michelle den Dekker and Vicki Wilson. Domestically, she captain-coached Manly-Warringah to six straight New South Wales state titles in the 1980s and led NSW to four national titles in 1984, 1985, 1987 and 1988. Since retiring in 1988, Sargeant has built an extensive media career as a columnist, motivational speaker and sports commentator, calling multiple Netball World Cups for outlets including ESPN and ABC Grandstand, and remains a national selector for the Australian Diamonds. She was the first-ever netballer inducted into the Australian Netball Hall of Fame (2008), was elevated to Legend status in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2015 — the first netballer to receive the honour — and was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 1998.
