Aleksander Aamodt Kilde was born on 21 September 1992 in Bærum, Norway, and switched from soccer to skiing as a child with the encouragement of his family, including his older brother Andreas. He made his World Cup debut in October 2012 and steadily built toward the top of the speed disciplines, winning the super-G title in the 2015-16 season. Kilde's career peak came in the shortened 2019-20 season, when he won the overall World Cup title, becoming only the fourth Norwegian man to do so after Kjetil André Aamodt, Lasse Kjus, and Aksel Lund Svindal. He went on to win back-to-back downhill discipline titles in 2022 and 2023, and at the Beijing 2022 Olympics he won silver in the alpine combined and bronze in the super-G. He has been in a relationship with fellow overall World Cup champion Mikaela Shiffrin since 2021, with the couple announcing their engagement in April 2024. A horrific crash at the Wengen Lauberhorn downhill in January 2024 left Kilde with severe injuries requiring multiple surgeries, keeping him off the World Cup circuit for nearly 685 days. He made an emotional comeback at Copper Mountain in November 2025, but continued physical challenges led him to withdraw from the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympics just weeks before the Games, acknowledging that his body was not yet ready to compete safely at that level.
