Slovak ice hockey right winger who scored 329 NHL goals and was one of the most skilled European players of his era, representing Slovakia internationally.

Zigmund Pálffy was born in Skalica, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia) in 1972. New York Islanders selected him 26th overall in the 1991 NHL Draft. His career produced 329 goals and 397 assists for 726 career points — but persistent hip injuries limited him to 634 games when he might otherwise have played 1,000 or more. He scored 45 or more goals in three consecutive seasons with the Islanders. He was selected to two All-Star games. He represented Slovakia at multiple World Championships and Olympics. He was one of the most exciting pure scorers of his era — a combination of speed, shooting accuracy and creative playmaking that made him dangerous from anywhere on the ice. His hip condition required surgery that altered his skating mechanics and effectively ended his ability to perform at elite level after 2002. He retired aged 31 — one of hockey's most significant injury-related early retirements given his scoring rate.
