He began at Porto in 1988 and became one of Europe's finest shot-stoppers, winning everything the Portuguese game had to offer. A brief spell at Barcelona in the late 1990s was not a success, and he returned to Porto, where he entered the most successful phase of his career under José Mourinho. He won the UEFA Cup in 2003 and the Champions League in 2004 with Porto, as well as multiple Primeira Liga titles. He earned 80 caps for Portugal between 1994 and 2006, appearing at three World Cups and two European Championships, and played in the 2004 Euro final on home soil.
