American basketball guard who dominated the 1980s NBA with elite two-way play, earning two Defensive Player of the Year awards and five All-Star selections.

Sidney Ancel Moncrief was born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957 and attended the University of Arkansas. Milwaukee Bucks selected him fifth overall in the 1979 NBA Draft. His 11-season career produced 17.8 points per game and five All-Star appearances. He won the Defensive Player of the Year award in consecutive seasons (1983, 1984) — the first player to win the award in back-to-back years. He was named to the All-NBA Defensive First Team four times. He was the defensive anchor of Milwaukee Bucks teams that reached multiple conference finals in the early 1980s but could not overcome the Boston Celtics or Philadelphia 76ers. His combination of offensive consistency and defensive excellence made him the most complete two-guard of his era — a blueprint for later two-way shooting guards. Persistent knee injuries shortened his career and limited his effectiveness in his final seasons. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019. He returned to coaching after retirement and has been an assistant coach at multiple NBA levels. His defensive achievements created the template for how the Defensive Player of the Year award was subsequently valued.
