South African cricket all-rounder and former captain, one of the finest pace bowlers of his generation with over 400 Test wickets and 3000 Test runs.
Shaun Pollock was born on 16 July 1973 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and is the son of former Springbok cricketer Peter Pollock and nephew of Graeme Pollock. He made his Test debut in 1995 and became one of South Africa's most valuable players as a genuine all-rounder — scoring 3,781 Test runs and taking 421 Test wickets. His bowling was characterised by accuracy, movement and intelligence rather than pace. He captained South Africa in several Test series and was a key part of South Africa's rise to the top of the world rankings. He retired from Tests in 2008.
Taking 421 Test wickets while also scoring over 3,000 Test runs, making him one of cricket's greatest genuine all-rounders
His father Peter and uncle Graeme were both iconic South African cricketers — making the Pollock family one of the most celebrated in South African sporting history.
Did You Know?How They Played
Pollock was renowned for his metronomic accuracy and ability to move the ball both ways at a lively pace. As a bowler, he relied on subtle variations in pace and movement rather than express speed, consistently hitting the right areas to trouble batsmen. With the bat, he was a reliable lower-order contributor who could anchor an innings or accelerate when needed.
Lasting Impact
Pollock is remembered as one of the most complete cricketers of his generation and a key figure in South Africa's post-isolation cricket success. His combination of bowling skill, batting ability, and leadership helped establish South Africa as a consistent force in world cricket.
