Sergei Fedorov was born in Pskov, Russia in 1969. He defected from the Soviet Union to join the Detroit Red Wings in 1990 — one of the most significant individual defections in sports history, as he was one of the most celebrated players in Soviet hockey. His career produced 483 goals and 696 assists for 1,179 career points. He won three Stanley Cup championships with Detroit (1997, 1998, 2002). He won the Hart Trophy as MVP in 1994 and the Selke Trophy as best defensive forward twice. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015 and named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in 2017. He was considered by many the most physically gifted and complete player in the NHL during his peak years — capable of playing centre, wing, and even defence. He won Olympic gold with Russia in 2018 as a federation official. His combination of offensive production, defensive excellence, skating ability and physical gifts established him as the benchmark for what Russian players could achieve in the NHL.
