Born in Pontycymer, Bridgend, Wales, on 23 March 1980, Ryan Day was a highly rated amateur, reaching the final of the 1998 IBSF World Championship before turning professional the same year. He was named the WPBSA's Young Player of Distinction for 2000/01 and gradually built a reputation as one of the game's most prolific break-builders. Day reached three World Championship quarter-finals between 2008 and 2012 and climbed to a career-high ranking of world number six in 2009/10, but a maiden ranking title eluded him through four runner-up finishes. The breakthrough finally arrived in 2017, seventeen years into his professional career, when he won the Riga Masters, followed soon after by the Gibraltar Open in the same season. He added the Snooker Shoot Out in 2021 and the British Open in 2022, defeating Mark Allen in the final for the biggest title of his career. A prolific break-builder, Day has compiled close to 500 career century breaks and four maximum 147s, among the higher totals of his generation. He has represented Wales in various team events throughout a career now spanning more than 25 years. Day continues to compete on the main tour, running a snooker academy at his father's club in his hometown of Pontycymer to help develop young Welsh talent.
