Richard Hill

English flanker nicknamed the 'Silent Assassin', widely regarded as the finest blindside flanker of his generation and a key member of England's 2003 World Cup-winning back row.

Born on 23 May 1973, Richard Hill made his England debut in the 1997 Five Nations against Scotland, having been selected ahead of Neil Back at a time when Back was controversially overlooked. Hill toured with the British Lions to South Africa that same year, starting the first two Tests of a series victory just months into his international career. Hill spent his entire professional career at Saracens, making 288 appearances for the club, and was so highly regarded that Wigan's rugby league side made an approach to sign him during the 1990s, which he turned down. He moved from openside to blindside flanker to accommodate Neil Back in the England side, forming an England and Lions back-row trinity with Back and Lawrence Dallaglio that dominated world rugby through the early 2000s. Nicknamed the 'Silent Assassin' for his unseen, high-impact contributions — delivering big hits and sapping opponents' energy without seeking the limelight — Hill was widely regarded as the best player in his position in the world. At the 2003 Rugby World Cup, he was selected in the squad despite being unfit with a hamstring injury, only being declared match fit in time for the semi-final, where he played a pivotal role in England's triumph. Hill won 71 caps for England, scoring 12 tries, and five caps across three British & Irish Lions tours (1997, 2001, 2005). He was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame and later worked as England's team manager during the 2019 World Cup campaign, having previously coached in the Saracens academy.
