Redmond 'Red' Gerard was born on 29 June 2000 in Ohio, the sixth of seven children, and moved with his family to Summit County, Colorado in 2007. He began snowboarding at age two, working his way up through the amateur ranks from 2011 before turning pro in 2016. At the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, the 17-year-old Gerard was little known outside the sport before his slopestyle final run. After faltering on his first two attempts, he landed a triple cork 1440 on his third and final run to leapfrog Canadians Mark McMorris and Max Parrot for gold, becoming the first American gold medalist of the Games and the youngest Winter Olympics medalist born in the 2000s.
