German football defender and midfielder who captained Bayern Munich and Germany to multiple titles, including the 2014 World Cup and 2013 Champions League.
Philipp Lahm was born in Munich, Germany in 1983. Bayern Munich's academy produced him before a key loan spell at Stuttgart developed his tactical education. His fourteen Bayern senior seasons produced seven Bundesliga titles, six DFB-Pokals and the 2013 Champions League Treble. He was Germany's World Cup-winning captain in 2014 — lifting the trophy in Brazil. He was named UEFA's best defender twice. His ability to play at right-back, left-back and in central midfield at international level — each position to an elite standard — reflected tactical intelligence that his coaches described as unique in the modern game. He could read the game three moves ahead and adjust his positioning accordingly. He retired at 33 — voluntarily, at the peak of his powers — refusing Bayern's attempt to extend his contract because he felt the demands of elite football had been met. He became the organiser of the 2024 UEFA European Championship hosted by Germany. He never missed a major tournament through injury. He is widely considered the greatest German player of his generation alongside Thomas Müller.
