Formula 1 Driver

British Formula 1 driver who became World Champion in 1992 and uniquely won the IndyCar championship the following year in 1993.

Nigel Ernest James Mansell was born in Upton-upon-Severn, Worcestershire in 1953. He is the only driver to hold the Formula 1 and IndyCar titles simultaneously — winning the IndyCar championship in his debut season in 1993 immediately after his F1 title in 1992. His 1992 season with Williams-Renault — 9 victories, pole positions and a dominant championship — was the finest individual F1 season of its decade. He came agonisingly close to the F1 title in 1986 (puncture on the final lap) and 1987 (crash). His moustache, combative style and British working-class background made him the most popular driver in British motorsport history.
