American beach volleyball player widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time, winning three consecutive Olympic gold medals with partner Kerri Walsh Jenn
Born in Los Angeles, California on July 30, 1977, Misty Elizabeth May-Treanor grew up in an athletic family that shaped her volleyball career. Her father, Butch May, was a national champion volleyball player, while her mother, Barbara May, competed in tennis. This sporting heritage led May-Treanor to excel in volleyball from an early age, playing both indoor and beach variants throughout her youth in Southern California. May-Treanor initially focused on indoor volleyball, starring at Long Beach State University where she helped lead the team to a national championship in 1998. After college, she transitioned to beach volleyball and formed her legendary partnership with Kerri Walsh Jennings in 2001. The duo quickly established themselves as the sport's dominant force, combining May-Treanor's exceptional defensive skills and court awareness with Walsh Jennings' powerful attacking ability. The partnership reached unprecedented heights with three consecutive Olympic gold medals in beach volleyball at the 2004 Athens, 2008 Beijing, and 2012 London Games. Their Olympic dominance was complemented by consistent success on the professional tour, where they won numerous AVP and FIVB titles. May-Treanor's career faced a significant challenge in 2008 when she suffered a torn Achilles tendon while competing on Dancing with the Stars, but she successfully rehabilitated the injury to capture her third Olympic gold four years later. May-Treanor announced her retirement following the 2012 Olympics, cementing her status as one of beach volleyball's greatest players. Alongside Walsh Jennings, she transformed the sport's profile and inspired a generation of athletes. Her combination of technical excellence, competitive drive, and longevity at the sport's highest level established the May-Treanor/Walsh Jennings partnership as the most successful in beach volleyball history. She remains deeply connected to volleyball through coaching and youth development programs.
