Michael Carrick was born in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear on 28 July 1981. He came through West Ham's academy alongside Joe Cole and Frank Lampard, making over 150 appearances before joining Tottenham in 2004. In 2006, Manchester United signed him for £18.6 million and he became one of the most underrated midfielders of his generation. Over 12 seasons at Old Trafford he made 464 appearances, winning five Premier League titles, the Champions League in 2008, one FA Cup and three League Cups. He captained the club in his final season. Known for his metronome-like passing and positional intelligence, he was central to Sir Alex Ferguson's later title-winning sides. He earned 34 England caps and later became a coach at United before taking the Middlesbrough manager role in 2022.
