Born in Pinner, in the London Borough of Harrow, on 14 September 1981, Martin Gould won the English Amateur Championship twice, in 2002 and 2007, either side of a spell away from the main tour, before establishing himself permanently as a professional from the 2007/08 season. Gould's game grew significantly during the early Barry Hearn era of the sport, and he came close to a career-defining run at the 2010 World Championship, leading Neil Robertson 11-5 in the last 16 before losing 13-12. He reached his first ranking final at the 2011 PTC Grand Finals, losing to Shaun Murphy, and broke into the world's top 16 for the first time in 2012, reaching a career-high ranking of world number 11. His maiden and only ranking title came at the 2016 German Masters in Berlin, where he beat Luca Brecel in front of a large home crowd. He reached a further ranking final at the 2020 European Masters, losing narrowly to Mark Selby. Gould compiled 251 century breaks and one maximum 147 across his career. Gould dropped off the main tour in 2025 following a series of health issues, closing out a professional career of more than two decades built on his fluent potting style that earned him the affectionate nickname 'The Pinner Potter'.
