Mark Lee McMorris was born on 9 December 1993 in Regina, Saskatchewan, an unlikely home province for a snowboarding prodigy, the son of provincial politician Don McMorris and nurse Cindy McMorris. He turned professional at 15 after his parents allowed him to leave high school, and made history in March 2011 by becoming the first person to land a backside triple cork 1440 on film. McMorris won double gold in slopestyle and big air at the 2012 X Games, becoming the first snowboarder since Shaun White in 2009 to sweep both events. Just two weeks before the 2014 Sochi Olympics, he broke a rib at the X Games, yet still competed and won bronze in slopestyle's Olympic debut - Canada's first medal of those Games. He defended his slopestyle bronze at Pyeongchang 2018, just eleven months after a horrific April 2017 backcountry filming accident left him with a fractured jaw, arm, pelvis, and ribs, a ruptured spleen, and a collapsed lung, requiring helicopter evacuation. McMorris added a third consecutive Olympic slopestyle bronze at Beijing 2022, becoming the first snowboarder to medal at three straight Olympics in the event. He has continued to break his own records at the X Games, reaching 25 total medals - the most in Winter X Games history across any sport - with a 12th gold coming in 2026. Despite a training crash at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympics that forced him out of big air, he recovered to qualify for the slopestyle final, extending his streak of Olympic appearances to four consecutive Games.
