Dutch footballer known for pace and crossing ability, won Champions League with Ajax (1995) and Premier League with Arsenal (1998), World Cup runner-up.

Marcus Overmars was born in Ernst, Netherlands in 1973. Ajax developed him into one of European football's most feared wingers before Arsenal paid £7 million in 1997. His three Arsenal seasons produced the Premier League and FA Cup Double in 1998 and a Champions League Final appearance in 2000. His pace — he was among the fastest players in the world during his peak — combined with close control and an accurate left foot made him impossible to defend against in wide areas. He won the Champions League with Ajax in 1995 as part of his celebrated young team. He moved to Barcelona in 2000 and won two La Liga titles. He represented the Netherlands 86 times, reaching the 1998 World Cup Final. Knee injuries curtailed his playing career. After retirement he became Ajax's director of football — building the remarkable team that reached the 2019 Champions League semi-final before selling core players — and briefly technical director at Barcelona before a workplace harassment scandal ended his executive career in 2022.
