Leroy Aziz Sané was born in Essen, Germany in 1996 — his father Souleymane was a professional footballer and his mother Régine a former rhythmic gymnast. Manchester City paid £37 million for him in 2016. He was named PFA Young Player of the Year in 2018 after a season of 10 goals and 15 assists — considered one of the finest individual wide forward seasons in recent Premier League history. He was controversially omitted from Germany's 2018 World Cup squad despite his form. Bayern Munich paid £55 million for him in 2020. His four Bayern seasons have produced four Bundesliga titles and the 2023 Champions League. A serious cruciate ligament injury in the 2019 Community Shield limited his final City season and his first Bayern period.
