Kelly Smith is widely regarded as one of the finest and most naturally gifted players England has produced, a technically brilliant forward who became the country's first professional female footballer when she moved to the United States in 1999. Across three spells at Arsenal she scored well over 100 goals and was instrumental in the club's 2006-07 quadruple-winning season, including the UEFA Women's Cup triumph that remains the only European title won by a British club. Battling serious knee injuries throughout her career, she still retired as England's all-time leading scorer with 46 goals in 117 caps, a record that stood until 2021, and was inducted into the National Football Museum Hall of Fame in 2017.
