Julio César Chávez González was born in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, Mexico in 1962 and grew up in extreme poverty. He began his professional career in 1980. He compiled a record of 87-0-1 before his controversial 1993 draw with Pernell Whitaker — a fight most observers felt Whitaker won clearly. He won world titles in three weight classes. He is the most celebrated active boxer in Mexican history — his fights were national events. He defeated Roger Mayweather, Héctor Camacho, Edwin Rosario and Greg Haugen in title fights. He is considered alongside Manny Pacquiao as the finest fighter to emerge from Latin America in the 20th century.
