One of football's last classic No.10 playmakers — a player of extraordinary technical quality who almost single-handedly carried Villarreal to the Champions League semi-finals.
Juan Román Riquelme was the last of football's great traditional No.10 — a player who played at his own tempo and controlled games through technical mastery rather than athletic power. At Villarreal he created some of the most memorable moments in the club's history, almost guiding them to the Champions League final in 2006. He won two Copa Libertadores titles with Boca Juniors and 97 Argentina caps.
He is widely considered the last of the great traditional No.10 playmakers — a style of footballer considered almost extinct in the modern game.
