South African-born New Zealand goal shooter and the most-capped netball international in history, with 217 combined Test appearances across two nations.

Irene van Dyk (née Viljoen) was born on 21 June 1972 in Vereeniging, South Africa, and grew up with a netball hoop permanently fixed outside the family home. She made her international debut for South Africa in 1994, going on to captain the Proteas and help them to a silver medal at the 1995 World Netball Championships in Birmingham, where she scored 56 of 57 attempts in an upset win over New Zealand in the pool stage. In 2000, van Dyk emigrated to Wellington, New Zealand, and was quickly selected for the Silver Ferns, a switch of allegiance that was initially contested by Netball South Africa. Standing 1.90m tall with a shooting percentage that rarely dipped below 90%, she became the face of New Zealand netball for over a decade, helping the Silver Ferns win the 2003 World Netball Championships in Jamaica and Commonwealth Games gold in both 2006 (Melbourne) and 2010 (Delhi), the latter an epic 66–64 final against Australia in which she top-scored. Van Dyk became the world's most-capped netballer in October 2005, surpassing England's Kendra Slawinski, and went on to make her 200th Test appearance in 2011. She retired from international netball in June 2014 at the age of 42, finishing with 217 combined caps (72 for South Africa, 145 for New Zealand) and a career shooting record of 5,917 goals from 6,572 attempts at 91% accuracy — figures unmatched in the sport's history. Domestically she played for Capital Shakers, then spent a decade with Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic (2003–2013), leading them to their first-ever ANZ Championship title in 2012, before finishing her career with Central Pulse.
