Hope Solo redefined the modern goalkeeper for the United States women's national team, combining athleticism and command of her area with an assertive, outspoken personality that made her one of the sport's most recognisable figures. She won back-to-back Golden Glove awards as the tournament's outstanding goalkeeper at the 2011 and 2015 FIFA Women's World Cups, the latter sealing the USA's third world title with a 5-2 final win over Japan in which she played every minute of the tournament. Solo also won Olympic gold in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012, and retired holding the American record for goalkeeper appearances, wins, and clean sheets. Her international career ended in controversy after her contract was terminated by US Soccer in 2016.
