American basketball shooting guard who played 13 NBA seasons, known for his three-point shooting and representing Team USA at the 1994 World Championship.
Hersey Frank Hawkins was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1966 and attended Bradley University where he was the leading scorer in Division I basketball in 1988. Philadelphia 76ers selected him sixth overall in the 1988 NBA Draft. His 13-season career produced 14.7 points per game and one All-Star appearance. He was one of the early adopters of the three-point shot as a primary offensive weapon, shooting over 200 threes per season consistently from the early 1990s. He shot 39.3% from three across his career. He won Olympic gold with the USA at the 1994 FIBA World Championships in Toronto — a team that featured Isiah Thomas, Reggie Miller and Shawn Kemp among others. He was a consistent and efficient scorer on every team he played for, never attracting significant national attention despite his production. He represents the generation of shooting guards who shaped the modern three-point revolution without receiving the credit they deserved. His combination of mid-range reliability, three-point range and free throw shooting (87.5% career) made him one of the most efficient perimeter scorers of the late 1980s and 1990s.
