Gary Wayne Roberts was born in Whitby, Ontario in 1965. Calgary Flames selected him 12th overall in the 1984 NHL Draft. His 22-season career produced 438 goals and 416 assists for 854 career points. He won the Stanley Cup with Calgary in 1989. He was a physical power forward who combined elite goal-scoring — 53 goals in 1991-92 — with a willingness to fight and play through contact. He suffered severe neck injuries in 1996 that required surgery and were expected to end his career. He underwent an extraordinary physical rehabilitation programme — transforming his body and approach to conditioning — and returned to play another 12 seasons, winning the Bill Masterton Award in 1996. He scored 30 or more goals in multiple seasons after the comeback. After his career he founded a fitness business that trains elite athletes across multiple sports, becoming one of hockey's most influential post-career figures. His transformation from near-retirement through rehabilitation to continued elite performance is one of sport's great comeback stories.

Roberts was a power forward who combined scoring ability with physical toughness and intimidation.
