American MMA pioneer and the first UFC Middleweight (later Light Heavyweight) Champion, who retired a four-time defending undefeated titleholder and later became a founding figure of Strikeforce.

Born Frank Alicio Juarez III on 8 December 1972, Frank Shamrock overcame a turbulent childhood — including time as a ward of the state and a juvenile prison stint — before being adopted into the Shamrock family and trained by his brother Ken. He built his early reputation in Japan's Pancrase promotion, becoming interim King of Pancrase in 1996. Shamrock joined the UFC in 1997 and defeated Kevin Jackson to become the promotion's first Middleweight Champion (a title later renamed Light Heavyweight). He defended the belt four times, submitting Jeremy Horn, Igor Zinoviev and Tito Ortiz, among others, before retiring undefeated as champion in 1999 — a rare feat in combat sports. Shamrock went on to win further titles across multiple organizations, including the WEC Light Heavyweight Championship and the Strikeforce Middleweight Championship, becoming the only fighter to hold UFC, WEC and Strikeforce titles. He famously knocked out rival Cesar Gracie in 20 seconds in 2006, setting a North American MMA attendance record in his hometown of San Jose. Named 'Fighter of the Decade' for the 1990s by the Wrestling Observer, Shamrock retired in 2010 with a 23-10-2 record. He later became a broadcaster and an early promotional partner in building Strikeforce into a major MMA brand before its acquisition by the UFC.
